Prosecutors allege that in the early hours of January 29, 2022, after a night of drinking, Read intentionally backed her Lexus SUV into her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe, and left him to die in a blizzard outside the Canton home of a fellow officer.

The defense, led by attorney Alan Jackson, argues that O'Keefe was actually beaten inside the home and that Read is being framed by a group of well-connected individuals, including law enforcement officials.

The prosecution, which presented its case over five weeks, called 38 witnesses and focused on physical evidence like pieces of a broken taillight found at the scene and testimony from first responders who claimed they heard Read say "I hit him."

A significant point of contention remains the admissibility of Trooper Michael Proctor's text messages. The defense is fighting to introduce them as evidence of a biased and corrupt investigation, while the prosecution opposes their inclusion. The judge has yet to issue a final ruling on the matter.
